Generator Noise at Boundary Calculator
Noise complaints stop sites. This estimates the sound level at your boundary from a generator’s rated output, and shows what a silent canopy or extra distance actually buys you.
Generator Noise at the Boundary
Sound level at your site boundary from a generator, checked against typical UAE day and night limits.
Indicative only. Confirm every sizing against the manufacturer's data and a qualified electrical engineer before ordering or installing.
How this calculation works
Generator noise is quoted as a sound pressure level in decibels at a reference distance — usually 1 metre or 7 metres. Check which, because they aren’t comparable.
Sound spreads out as it travels. For a point source in free field, the level falls by 6 dB for each doubling of distance:
L₂ = L₁ − 20 × log₁₀(d₂ ÷ d₁)
So a set at 85 dB(A) at 1 metre is around 65 dB(A) at 10 metres and 45 dB(A) at 100 metres.
Decibels are logarithmic, which is unintuitive. A 3 dB reduction halves the sound energy. A 10 dB reduction is perceived as roughly half as loud. And two identical generators side by side are only 3 dB louder than one — not double.
Canopies. A standard open set might be 95–100 dB(A) at 1 m. An acoustic canopy typically brings that to 75–85 dB(A). Super-silent enclosures go lower again. The difference between a standard and a silent canopy is often the difference between a permitted installation and a shut-down one.
Real sites aren’t free field. Reflective surfaces — walls, hard ground, adjacent buildings — raise levels above the free-field prediction. Barriers and soft ground lower them. Treat this calculator as a planning estimate. If you’re close to a limit, get an acoustic measurement.
Permissible Noise Limits
Workplace/Occupational Limits: Governed by OSHAD standards at an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA.
Residential Areas: Maximum limits typically range from 55 dBA to 65 dBA at the property boundary, with stricter enforcement during nighttime hours.
Commercial and Mixed-Use Zones: Standard daytime caps average up to 65 dBA to 70 dBA.
Industrial Zones (e.g., Musaffah): Thresholds extend up to 70 dBA to 75 dBA.
Typically the framework distinguishes daytime from night-time limits and tightens substantially for residential areas at night — which is why night working near housing so often requires a super-silent set, a barrier, or both.
Note: Above numbers are for general reference. Check and reassure the permissible noise limits with relevant authorities.
Worked example
A 500 kVA set in an acoustic canopy rated 78 dB(A) at 7 metres, positioned 40 metres from the nearest residential boundary.
L₂ = 78 − 20 × log₁₀(40 ÷ 7) = 78 − 20 × log₁₀(5.71) = 78 − 20 × 0.757 = 62.9 dB(A) at the boundary
Whether that passes depends on the zone and the time of day. If the applicable night limit is tighter, the options are: move the set further away, fit an acoustic barrier, or specify a super-silent enclosure. Doubling the distance to 80 metres would bring it to about 57 dB(A).
Common mistakes
Comparing dB figures at different reference distances. 85 dB at 1 m and 85 dB at 7 m are very different machines.
Assuming free field on a real site. Hard surfaces reflect. Actual levels run higher than the simple calculation.
Forgetting the exhaust. Engine exhaust is often the dominant noise source and is directional. Point it away from the boundary.
Ignoring low frequency. dB(A) weighting understates low-frequency content, which travels further and penetrates buildings better. Complaints about “rumble” often come from installations that pass on dB(A).
Assuming two sets are twice as loud. They’re 3 dB louder.
FAQ
How loud is a diesel generator? An open set runs 95–100 dB(A) at 1 metre. In an acoustic canopy, 75–85 dB(A). Super-silent enclosures go lower still.
How far away should a generator be from buildings? Far enough to meet the applicable boundary limit, and far enough for safe access, ventilation and exhaust clearance. Every doubling of distance buys about 6 dB.
What are the noise limits in the UAE? They’re set by the relevant municipality and environment authority, and vary by emirate, by zone and between day and night. Confirm the current limit for your specific location before finalising a layout.
How do I reduce generator noise on site? Specify a silent or super-silent canopy, increase the distance to the boundary, add an acoustic barrier, orient the exhaust away from sensitive receptors, and fit a residential- grade exhaust silencer.
