A Generator is composed of two major components. Engine and Alternator. Engine is run by burning some sort of fuel in liquid or gas state. Engine rotates alternator which produces electricity. Here we will discuss types of generators based on the fuel types.
- Gasoline or Petrol Powered Generator
This is the most common type of power generators. They are compact and portable and come in small capacities, usually up to 8kw single phase. This type of generator is widely used for emergency, remote sites, camping etc. Since gasoline is widely used and readily available, it is a good choice for camping. There are also risk involved in operating gasoline generator as gasoline is highly flammable.
- Diesel powered generators
One of the most common type of generators used for all sorts of applications are diesel engine powered generators. Diesel is less flammable than gasoline and comparatively safe to store and transport. It is also more economical. Diesel generators come from 3kw to 1mw. Due to advance technologies the footprints of diesel generators have reduced dramatically. Now these generators are available in smaller sizes and they are way more fuel efficient and environment friendly than their predecessors. This is the most common in Generator Rental and Hire industry.
- Bio Diesel generator
Like diesel generator it runs on bio diesel, which is produced from plants like corn, and algae etc. though it is considered green fuel but since it still produces emissions, it is not as green as it may seem.
- Emulsified Diesel Generators
Emulsion is made of a mixture of diesel and water. It is not new to run engines with emulsion fuel. In WW2 German forces used emulsion fuel for their tanks. The challenge is that emulsions are not stable so you have to burn it as soon as it is made or else water separates from oil over time. It is saves cost considerably as 30 to 40% water is being used as a fuel.
- Gas powered Generators
Gas powered generators run on gas like propane, LPG, CNG, and even bio gas. Gas run generators are expensive to buy and maintain that’s why they are not very common. Storing gas for engines is also challenging which makes them less popular.
- Hydrogen Generator
Yes that’s right, Hydrogen! Since 1800s the efforts have been made to run engines in hydrogen for its many advantages over conventional fuels. It can be produced abundantly from water, it is non toxic, cheap, clean and it produces more power per pound than other fuels. Though its not widely available yet but people have been making good progress in making engines run on hydrogen.
